Active Winter Adventures for After the Festivities are Over!

By: Donna Doouss

That week between Christmas and New Year's and even after everything is done is the perfect time to get out and burn off some holiday calories. With many people off work, it's a great opportunity to explore the unique outdoor beauty of Southern Ontario.

1. Skating Through the Woods: Ice Skating Trails

Trade the indoor rink for a scenic adventure on a natural ice skating trail! While our local outdoor rinks are great, destinations like the Arrowhead Provincial Park Ice Skating Trail (near Huntsville) are worth the drive for a truly magical Canadian experience. Alternatively, check your nearest conservation area or municipal park for local outdoor rinks—they are often free and a great way to enjoy the crisp winter air.

2. Winter Hikes and Frozen Waterfalls

Don’t pack away your hiking boots just because of the snow. Winter hiking offers quiet, stunning views, especially around the Hamilton/Milton Conservation Areas like Rattlesnake Point or Webster's Falls (check if access is restricted). If the weather is cold enough, seeing waterfalls like Tiffany Falls or Sherman Falls frozen in dramatic cascades is a breathtaking, free experience (parking fees may apply).  Check Hamilton Waterfalls or Conservation Halton for current trail conditions and closures.

3. New Year’s Day Fresh Start

Instead of a late night on the 31st, plan an early start on January 1st! Many conservation areas offer organized New Year’s Day Hikes to encourage people to start the year with fresh air and exercise. Look for event listings from local organizations like the Grand River Conservation Authority for details on local trails and activities.  Look for programs offered by the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA)
