By: Donna Doouss

When Christmas Day passes, the festive spirit doesn't have to dim! Many of Southern Ontario’s most impressive light displays run straight through the New Year, offering the perfect activity for visiting guests or a magical post-holiday decompression. You have great local and day-trip options available:

1. The Local Favourite: Guelph's Sparkles in the Park (Free)
Just a stone's throw away, Guelph’s Sparkles in the Park at Riverside Park is a beloved tradition. This fantastic display of lights is available for both walk-through and drive-through viewing and runs right until December 31st. It is a wonderful, free event supported by local community efforts, though donations are gratefully accepted at the gate. A perfect, low-key evening trip!   Check the Rotary Club for details

2. The Regional Day Trip: Lights On Stratford
If you’re looking for a cultural experience, the Lights On Stratford Winter Festival of Lights is worth the drive. This award-winning festival transforms Stratford's heritage downtown core and park system with luminous art and stunning interactive installations. This festival runs well into the New Year, offering a great incentive for a post-Christmas getaway.  Runs from Dec 12, 2025, to Jan 18, 2026. Visit LightsOnStratford.ca for more info

3. The Garden Escape: RBG Winter Wonders (Burlington)
For a more structured experience, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) Winter Wonders in Burlington. Hendrie Park transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland featuring dazzling lights, festive installations, and a beautiful botanical train display indoors. This event runs until early January and requires time-ticketed admission—be sure to book in advance!  Runs until Jan 4, 2026 (closed Dec 24-26, Dec 31, Jan 1). Details and ticketing are available on the RBG website
